Citischool
Countec's interest in running a Personalised Education Centre (PEC) grew from our experience of running a small independent school, Citischool, from 2001.
Back then, alternative education in Milton Keynes was delivered by a number of alternative education providers on contracts with MK Local Authority. Citischool offered a full-time work-related learning programme for 15-16 year olds who were excluded or otherwise disengaged from mainstream school.
In Citischool, based on New York City As School, the city was a 'classroom' in which the citizens were teachers, hosting students on work placements and running small group sessions in their expert areas, e.g. BT communication skills and teamwork skills with the Fire & Rescue Service.
In total more than 150 students were enrolled in Citischool and more than 50 employers were involved. iPEC was created with the aim of using Citischool's best features, particularly its focus on 'adult majority' and 'real work' experiences, while working more closely with local schools and the Local Authority to share best practice in the development of basic or 'functional' skills.
