De Vere Apprenticeship Success

By Susan Kirton, iPEC KS4 Personal Tutor:
I spoke to Ben Montgomery last week and asked him how his Apprenticeship was going. He said it was “brilliant”. While at iPEC last year, Ben was always been interested in catering.
I first met Ben when he was a year 10 student in mainstream school and I was working on SWEEP, the Supported Work Experience Extended Placements Project. He was not coping with the classroom situation very well and spent most of his time outside his headteacher's office. His work placement was arranged firstly at Pizza Hut and he was very successful there. Ben also started the Fast Forward Catering course at Bletchley College.
In year 11 Ben joined iPEC. Having worked with Ben in my previous role and having built up a relationship with him he joined my tutor group. Ben had had a successful first year on Fast Forward and we were able to carry this on. A new placement was set up for Ben at Ramada Encore and again he was very successful. With all these opportunities for Ben to pursue his catering interest and our alternative approach to his core studies, Ben found it easier to get along. He did not enjoy the exam period though.
On leaving iPEC, Ben was not sure what to do. The teacher at the College had changed and Ben did not get on with him very well. Barbara Knotley (Prospects) informed us of a new opportunity at De Vere Harben House and Ben jumped at the chance.
I have visited Ben at De Vere and his tutors there are very impressed with him, one of them told me he was "one of the best students in his cohort”. Ben is hoping to complete the catering apprenticeship and move on to a management course. Ben’s ambition is to become a world famous Chef with Michelin stars or to be a Chef on cruise ships. Ben has promised that when he is, he will not forget all the encouragement he received at iPEC!
Ben's mother wrote: "Ben has loved every minute of it , and I am so very proud of him, and was cheering him on from the sidelines. I cannot thank you enough for all your support and encouragement you gave to both Ben and myself we could not have coped without your input and will always be grateful".
David Barton is also at De Vere. He is completing the Customer Service Apprenticeship and when I went in, I found he was also enjoying the course. David could be very temperamental while at iPEC and when he left us it looked as though he would be not in employment, education or training (NEET). David was in independent living and was not doing much with himself. Again Prospects advised David about the opportunity and he decided to go for it. When I saw him David said he had “made a good decision and was really enjoying the apprenticeship course".
