Fresh Minds Help NHBC – second successful pilot

A second pilot event took place on Tuesday 30th November 2011 at NHBC, the National House Building Council, with students from Leon School.
12 students participated, taking a tour of the business premises, finding out about the company and being briefed on a current, authentic business problem. The session included a structured brainstorm where the students brought their ‘fresh minds’ to the table, then selected best solutions and presented them back to the company.
The aim was to benefit students by improving their business awareness, problem solving and communication skills. The business benefited by finding out what today's young people thought about work and by getting the many new ideas that the students came up with.
“All the points of the focus were well explained and easy to follow," said Clive Jearrad, a teacher from Leon School. "It was a very good experience.”
One student said: “I enjoyed learning about the company and how the business is run.” Another said: “I learnt how to communicate well in a group and how to write and perform a speech.”
Andy Pennock from NHBC said: “’The NHBC is very proud to be associated with Countec and the excellent work they do. The Fresh Minds Event was a fantastic opportunity for us to engage with the students from Leon School: their mature and responsive approach to the challenge set was exceptional and a credit to the School. Both as a company and as individuals, we look forward to future events such as these.’’
