From New Town To International City
When Milton Keynes was disignated a New Town in 1967 some 60,000 people lived in what is now the Boroguh of Milton Keynes and 21,000 people worked in the Borough.
Now the town is a thriving community with a population of 230,000 people and 150,000 jobs. The town is testament to the vision and drive of the many people from all walks of life who planned the town and turned a viosion into reality.
In the next 25 years it is expected that the population of Milton Keynes will have grown to around 320,000 people, following completion of some 70,000 new homes. This is growth on a similar scale to that in the last 40 years.
The expansion of Milton Keynes will only be sustainable if new jobs are created in parallel with the expansion of the population and the resident workforce. Forecasts indicate that to ensure a reasonable balance between those seeking work and the jobs available tolocal peolple it will be necessary to generate at least an additional 50,000 jobs in the Borough in the next 20 years.
For this Milton Keynes needs its young people to be entrepreneurial as well as employable.
