It Helped Me Learn About My Job!

"I enjoyed every minute," said David Wake from John Lewis. "It helped me develop and get over my fear of standing up and speaking."
David was one of 75 employers joined students at St. Paul's RC School for a 'mega' day of work-related learning on 12th July. David's challenge was to 'teach' a group of 25 Year 10 students how to compete in small teams to produce paper envelopes.
"The aim of the day was to develop students' employability and enterprise skills," said Michael Sandison, Countec's Director of Employer Engagement. "We brought in a very strong team of employer guests representing a wide range of sectors and sizes."
The day involved a series of activities in which employers played roles as WorkOut! guest speakers and Business Ambassadors in one of Countec's other workshops: 'Choose Me!' (self-management), 'Move It!' (teamwork), 'Height of Hearing' (problem solving) and 'Launch A European Tour' (enterprise). Most employers stayed for just two sessions, fitting it into their normal working day, while others stayed the whole day.
"It was a really fantastic, enjoyable day," said guest Rosemary McDonagh of FCO Services. "What I enjoyed most was meeting the students and their different personalities," said Jim Tagg (pictured), E-Sourcing Manager for Home Retail Group. "The studnts are an asset to the school and really worked hard today," said Helen Thompson of HSBC.
"I learned a lot about my job!" said Claudia Rosani of The Open University. "I was also interested in the students’ attitudes and it was a better impression than I was expecting."
The event was a success, with 97% of all employers agreeing to do the same thing in another school next year. Of 25 staff involved in evaluating the event, all 25 said the students had been motivated to learn.
"The students found the tasks engaging and relevant," said teacher Jennifer Rowlands. "The activities gave them good opportunities to develop teamwork and creativity."
