MK Businessman Gets Buzz Seeing Young People Achieve

“There’s more to life than financial rewards,” says Alan Bullen, MD of Lynx Networks, an IT infrastructure company which he set up in Milton Keynes in 1988.
When it comes to education charity work in Milton Keynes, Alan Bullen has a can-do attitude. He is a trustee of Countec, Milton Keynes Education Business Partnership, and Chair of Milton Keynes Young Enterprise, whose recent successes include two winning teams in the this year’s cross-county competition.
“What motivates me is the buzz I get from seeing what young people can achieve,” says Alan. “It’s always a challenge trying to get the best out of people.”
From his early experiences running discos as a teenager in Toddington , Bedfordshire, Alan wanted to run his own business. After an apprenticeship and career in data communications, he chose Milton Keynes to set up his business because it was open and affordable. “MK is a great place to do business because it’s vibrant and free flowing.”
Alan believes MK’s business people can do more to help young people by opening their doors to them. “Hosting young people on work experience isn’t always easy – we know because we host several each year at Lynx,” says Alan. “It does require effort but the rewards can be high and we often spot real talent.”
“Young people are often very creative as they haven’t been too shaped and aren’t stuck in their ways. Business needs to understand the generation coming through, how they communicate, because it’s going to shape their future business.
“There is an important role for business in helping young people to develop the skills and attitudes they will need for successful employment. As a recently-appointed trustee of Countec, I know we can get more employers involved in getting the best out of MK’s young people, and I look forward to the journey ahead.”
