Primary WorkOut!

Feedback received recently from MK primary schools:
"The Primary WorkOut! event has broadened the thinking of many of our pupils and hopefully raised aspirations in addition to providing a great opportunity for them to practise their questioning, speaking and listening skills." - Caroline Lewis, Headteacher of Drayton Park.
“The session was interesting, enjoyable and useful!“ - Michelle Jessop, Deputy Headteacher of Giffard Park.
“It was a great opportunity for the children to ask their own questions” - Jemma Freeman, Head of Year 6 at Greenleys.
“A very well organised and planned session – just the right amount of time for our pupils too.” - Ruth Hemingway, Deputy Headteacher of Brooksward.
“A super afternoon. Well organised prior to the visit and during.” - Katie Morlidge, Deputy Headteacher of Cedars.
What is it?
Primary WorkOut! helps 9-11 year olds develop knowledge of the world of work and employability skills by introducing them to a range of local employers in two-hourly classroom carousel sessions.
After a 10-minute briefing assembly, each class group spends 20- 25 minutes with each guest, who will:
- Answer (Yes/No only) to 20 pupil questions intended to find out his/her job
- Talk for 5 minutes about what his/her job typically involves (tasks, team, clothing/equipment) and pass around an item from work
- Respond to pupil questions about the employability skills and personal qualities needed for that job, with special emphasis on regular attendance and punctuality
- Answer pupils’ open questions about his/her job, prompted by a prepared list (see download)
Schools receive a pupil questionnaire to help pupils find out more from their parents about jobs they have done and a follow-up evaluation of their findings and feelings about work. Parents are welcome to join sessions as questioners or to volunteer as Primary WorkOut! guest speakers.
Primary WorkOut! meets PSHE curriculum requirements by helping pupils ‘learn about the range of jobs carried out by people they know, and understand how they can develop skills to make their own contribution in the future’ (PSHE 1e). It helps pupils to think aspirationally about career options
Each session is facilitated by Countec staff who work flexibly with each school to maximise student learning. Requirements include one classroom per class group and an assembly area for briefing and de-briefing with the whole year group.
The charge to the school is £100 per session (up to 4 class groups). Feedback from primary schools has been very positive.
Primary WorkOut! is subsidised by Home Retail Group.
