Report Shows Careers Helped By Employers Visiting Schools

A 'Work Readiness' Survey conducted by Berkshire Education Business Organisation in 2011 shows employers believe their engagement with schools helps young people gain insight on career options.
The onoing survey, conducted in July 2011, was completed by 182 businesses in the Berkshire region who had either hosted student on work experience or expressed an interest in helping young people in the workplace.
The report showed that young people's ICT skills exceeded employers' expectations, while their literacy skills fell below expectations. The development of young people's overall attitude to work was seen as fundamental to successful employment.
The report concluded that industry knowledge was probably best gained from people working within that industry. Also, that it was important to provide role models who demonstrate a strong set of values.
