Self Management
This is a half-termly four-week courses for 12 Key Stage 3 students who are at risk of exclusion, to help them become more successful in accessing the curriculum and maintaining their mainstream school place. This course focuses on social/life skills, citizenship and teamwork challenges, PSHE involving external agencies, art and drama workshops to explore critical issues. The course includes different stages:
- Week 1: referral received, student visited in school, student visited at home
- Weeks 2-4: various activities in self management and personal development/awareness, frequent liaison with parents, schools and other agencies
- Week 5: final week of programme, students prepared to return to school (strategies and scripts to manage and cope on return to school), Graduation on final day (parents, schools, local authority officers and other agency staff invited to celebrate students’ achievements/certificates)
- Week 6: students return to schools, assessment and other documents forwarded to home and school, reintegration visits to schools, lunchtime drop-in sessions, one-to-one meetings with students to review progress on Recall Days.
The course provides respite and orientation, as well as personal skills development, and could involve the private company’s staff in both delivery and follow-up mentoring of students.
